Thomas O. Crowl Civil War letters, 1861-1887 (bulk 1861-1864).

The collection contains letters from Thomas O. Crowl to his family and friends in Pennsylvania, 17 October 1861-13 June 1864. He writes to his sisters Mary Crowl and Mrs. Mary Spangle Gardner, his uncle and aunt Peter and Moll Spangle, his mother Bridget Crowl, and his friend William W. Fetrow, Siddonsburg, York County, Pa. about camp life, his health (he was nearly blind by 1864), and says in a 21 April 1864 that he married a black woman. Crowl writes from Cockeysville and Monkton Mills, Md.; Hampshire County, Winchester, Brandy Station, and Cold Harbor, Va.; and Harpers Ferry, W. Va. Also, includes a letter from George McClure, 4 November 1864, stationed at the federal prisoner-of-war camp in Elmira, N.Y. to his sisters; a letter from Thomas Crowl's mother Bridget to her daughter, 11 May 1865, with news of his death; a marksman's certificate for his brother Taylor Crowl, 13 July 1887; and a clipping about a history of the 87th Regiment to be published.

Thomas O. Crowl was a soldier in Company H, 87th Pennsylvania Infantry Regiment in the American Civil War. He died 18 September 1864. Private (PVT) George McClure enlisted on 28 August 1861 and went to train at Camp Wilkins, PA and joined the 100th Pannsylvania Volunteers, being sworn into federal service on 30 Aug 1861.
